The stunning Black Hills of South Dakota house a unique tribute to democracy's Fab Four. Begun in 1927 by sculptor Gutzon Borglum and 400 workers, the 60-foot-high busts of presidents Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln are carved into the granite of Mt. Rushmore National Memorial.

Features include a Presidential viewing trail, kid's exploration area, sculptor's studio, the free film, "Freedom: America's Lasting Legacy" and a lighting program, which shows nightly in summer.

For additional outdoor fun South Dakota state parks, such as the Lewis and Clark Recreation Area and Custer State Park, offer the Family Naturalist Program. This program helps the whole family enjoy the outdoors and better understand the plants, animals, cultural heritage and ecosystems encountered in everyday life. In the guidebook, families test their knowledge and learn about state symbols, the importance of wetlands, animal signs in the wild, what it's like to be a park or wildlife employee and how to be a wise camper. The guidebook is geared for families with 7-12 year olds and can be completed during a weekend or over an entire summer. Incentives are available for different levels of participation.

The Family Naturalist Guidebook is available only at select parks, but you can complete the activities in any South Dakota State Park. For a list of locations and for more information, visit SD State Parks online at www.sdgfp.info/Parks.

Finally, if you're following the Lewis and Clark Trail, a special visitor's package is available at selected Visitor Centers along the highway or by calling (800/S-DAKOTA). This is also the number to call for a general visitor's guide, or check out www.travelsd.com for more information on attractions and events in South Dakota.
