Snowsports New Hampshire
Many families looking for an active and stress-free vacation are surprised to learn what New Hampshire’s White Mountains have to offer. As a loyal New Hampshirite who took her first plunge down New Hampshire slopes at the age of 2, I may be a biased advocate for all that the Granite State has to offer. However, the combination of mountains and charming resort villages makes it the perfect destination for families seeking a fun and relaxing time away from home.
New Hampshire’s relatively small size makes it possible for skiers to sample a little bit of everything—from the western White Mountains to the Great North Woods. All within two hours driving time from Boston, these destinations are easily accessible, and a nice change from the traditional ski resort vacations out West - and much more affordable. The season runs from around Thanksgiving until the end of March, although spring skiing in April is an occasional treat.
Here are my personal favorites of New Hampshire’s treasures, all within a half-hour of each other in the western White Mountains.
Skiing and boarding are definitely the focus around these parts, yet the mountains and towns have much to offer besides the traditional past time, such as sleigh rides to outlet shopping. With more than 20 alpine ski areas to choose from, winter visitors to New Hampshire won’t be bored.
Best for Beginners & the Entire Family
Bretton Woods is New Hampshire’s largest ski resort, and the extensive selection of beginner and intermediate trails make it an ideal family destination. This constantly expanding resort features 101 trails and nine lifts, and was rated #1 in New Hampshire for best family programs by Ski Magazine in 2005. The area boasts a less windy climate than others, and is always making snow so it can open for the season in early November—the first resort to open in the state. Exceptional views of Mount Washington and the Presidential Range make Bretton Woods a picturesque experience. Bretton Woods in now under new ownership and is enhancing its Hobbits Family Center for the 06-07 season.
Many surrounding lodging facilities offer affordable midweek ski and stay packages that are good for all seven downhill ski resorts in the Mount Washington Valley. Travelers can settle in to comfortable New England style accommodations, ranging from the historical, elegant Mount Washington Hotel (800/314-1752) to the Lodge at Bretton Woods (800/314-1752), which boasts a fun, family-oriented atmosphere. On holidays and weekends, enjoy a free marshmallow roast while waiting for the shuttle. All four of Bretton Woods’ resorts have access to 100 kms of Nordic ski trails, sleigh rides, a spa and sports club, snow shoeing, ice skating, and much more. The resort offers Kids’ Camp at the Hobbit Ski Program for children 3 to 12, which includes either a half or full day, lunch, and rentals.
And for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, ride the historic Mount Washington Cog Railway to the summit and enjoy breathtaking views.
