This summer take your kids on an adventure to uncover the past. Together you can work alongside paleontologists, digging for never-before-seen dinosaur bones in Alberta, Canada at UNESCO World Heritage Site Dinosaur Provincial Park (403/378-4342). So grab your tools and head for the dirt.

Dinosaur Provincial Park and the Royal Tyrrell Museum (888/440-4240) are offering two separate options for the Bonebed 30 Guided Excavation package. The single-day excavation entails a full-day of digging with an experienced guide, who will introduce visitors to the park and help familiarize them with the area.

The package includes an orientation educating guests on the research project they will be assisting with and the various digging techniques, as well as a hike to survey the area for other sites. This program runs from July 4- September 5 from 8:30am-4pm and costs US$166.50/PP. Check the website for specific dates. Lunch is provided.

Those who have prior experience in excavating might want to try the two-day excavation package. This package is US$462.50/PP and includes meals and accommodations. Beginning at 9am on Saturday and ending at 4:15pm on Sunday, this option allows you to fully develop your skills and delve deeper into the storied past of the dinosaurs. This is a more demanding course for experienced diggers so beginners should opt for the single day package to begin with the basics. Dates for this package run from July 11- August 1.

Both excavation groups will be assisting the Royal Tyrrell Museum in their research efforts. The museum is unique in that it is Canada’s only museum dedicated solely to paleontology. It opened in 1985 and now encompasses an area of 11,200 sq. meters.

Highlights of the museum include Paleo Play Park, an outdoor play area, a cafeteria, and numerous exhibits such as the main attraction Dinosaur Hall, which displays 40 mounted skeletons of various dinosaur species. Admission: Adults (18-64): $10 Youth (7-17): $6 Seniors (65+): $8. Kids under 6 years of age are free.

A three-hour drive from Calgary Airport, Dinosaur Provincial Park is an inviting place to all. Offerings here include camping, guided and self-guided tours, hikes, a theater, bookstore, and food as well. Hours of operation vary depending on the season in which you visit so check the website to get the available hours during your visit.

All participants in both digs must be at least 14 years of age. Those participants who are between the ages of 14-17 must have a paying adult to accompany them. For more information or to reserve your spot visit Dinosaur Provincial Park or call 403/378-4344 or 403/378-4342.
