I've always enjoyed city trips or adventure/active trips with my daughter. An eleven year old is a great age to travel with - if you are looking for warm weather in winter, try Miami, San Antonio, or San Diego. San Francisco has mild weather in winter and there is tons to do. Vary the activities and book one active adventure like a bike tour or kayak tour. You can bike between missions in San Antonio or across the GOlden Gate bridge in SF, for example.

Go to at least one performance, hit a couple of museums, and taste ice cream or specialties of each place. We often develop a theme for food and rank all of the special desserts we try - that sort of thing.

You might keep an eye on special events in certain cities and try to plan around that. For example, CHicago has an excellent kids' film festival each October - and you could plan a trip around that. You might also plan a city visit that incorporates your child's interests.
