Escape Conformity, Experience the Wild on Fota Island, Ireland

With over 90 species, Ireland's Fota Wildlife Park is a must see for animal lovers who want to embrace their wild side. Witness endangered species or leisurely stroll through the Madagascar Trail while lemurs lurk in the surrounding plants. Watch ravenous cheetahs sprint to satisfy their larger than life appetite on the new Cheetah Run, which is one of only two in the world.

Fota Wildlife Park is known for its open atmosphere, as most of the habitats do not have visible barriers, leaving visitors in close proximity to the creatures. But no matter how adventurous you are, be cautious of this openness. Although some visitors have attempted bring home the smaller critters, such as the baby penguins.

The park has recently included new Conservation courses as part of their Educational programs. Of all their endangered species, Fota Wildlife Park continues to breed cheetahs. So far 180 cheetah cubs have been born there since 1985 helping to prevent their extinction. There are activities for all ages available specific to season such as, Summer Camps, Summer Safari Days, and Halloween Activity Days. Take the tour train through the park or simply follow the paths by foot. Playgrounds and picnic areas are throughout the park for visitors, or seek shelter from the occasional rain shower at the Oasis Restaurant. At the end of the day, feel free to consider adopting your animal of choice in attempt to bring your experience home.

Fota Wildlife Park is located on Fota Island, only 10 KM east of Cork and easily assessable from car and train. By car: N25 road to Cork, then take the Cobh Road (R22) and the entrance is just before the Belvelly Bridge. There is a direct train from Cork to FOTA Wildlife Park Station, a short 15 minutes; this train also connects to Dublin intercity trains. FOTA is only 15 minutes from Cork Airport.
