Bretton Woods Mountain Resort, New Hampshire

In 1998, Family Travel Forum asked a dozen top travel writers to share their "favorite family resorts" with readers. Here's one of their picks.

Boston -- Dorothy and Toto said it first, but in our many travels we also have discovered that there's no place like home. Well, OK, not home exactly, but as resident New Englanders who -- thanks to Mom's job -- are on the go a lot, we're in the happy process of getting to know our own region. Our top pick for a family destination is
Bretton Woods (

800/314-1752) ski resort in New Hampshire, according to Cole, age 8, Shane, 7, and Chloe, 5.
Why do we like it so much? Well, for one thing, it appeals year-round. Last year we skied at the resort, which is owned by the Mount Washington Hotel (
800/314-1752), and found it to be an easy, family-friendly mountain with a relaxed, low-key ambience.
This summer we returned and stayed in the same townhouse, which is equipped with a loft, full kitchen and Jacuzzi, as well as lots of board games and kid-friendly videos. Summer activities include nearby Storyland, Santa's Village, the Cog Railway, Heritage New Hampshire and the alpine slide at Attitash Ski Resort, just to name a few. We also spent time at the imposing Mount Washington Hotel across the street, sampling the children's program, riding horses and enjoying several plentiful meals.
