Amsterdam on the Queen's Birthday?
by David Sadler, Dorset, England
A Family Travel Forum father discusses the unsuitability of this event for his family.
Greetings to all at FTF. I was going to write to you about visiting Holland, specifically Amsterdam, on the Queen's birthday. I can do it in one word.
Don't.
We all like Amsterdam, and as a family we've visited The Amsterdam (the boat), and the museum, and done the boat trips along the canals, and even a "red light street" (by accident - some distraction required for that bit).
The Queen's birthday, which occurs annually on April 28th, is a celebration by Heineken lager. It's Europe's biggest street party, it's round the clock jazz, and it is a blast, but it is not a family affair.
I think we can count on one hand the number of children we saw, and they were nearly all in those smart new three wheel pushchairs.
So, the word on families touring Amsterdam on the Queen's birthday, from David, Victoria, Edward (8 years) and Matthew (6 years) is ...
Don't.
