Family Travel Forum - A Vermont Family Resort

Our favorite family inn is called The Highland Lodge. It's located in Greensboro, Vermont, about 50 minutes from Stowe. It's a lovely family resort (my parents and friends have stayed there many times), with Vermont charm, lovely gardens, a fun beach with sailing, cookouts, etc. and a beautiful view of Lake Caspian (one of those crystal clear Vermont lakes that make you feel reborn when you dive into it - not to get religious, but it is quite something.)

Cross-country skiing in the winter is also great. The town is tiny, with a classic village store - Willey's - with everything in it (we love it) and a charming gift shop - The Miller's Thumb - which has native Vermont crafts and antiques, as well as Italian pottery (Go figure.) The "summer folk" were originally academics primarily from the northeast (Yale) and it still has a bit of that ambiance. The closest town is Craftsbury which has a traditional town green with two or three inns around it. There is lovely chamber music in both towns during the summer, a tradition that my husband's grandfather started! There are two related books about the town. One book, "Crossing to Safety," is near and dear to us since it was written by the Gray's close friend, Wallace Stegner. The other is much more light-hearted, and speaks to some of the issues that have been part of Greensboro's history.
