Family Travel Forum: All you need to know before you go

Bozman, Maryland
by Ron Bozman

If traveling on the Chesapeake Bay peninsula, make an unconventional stop in my namesake town and have fun crabbing with your family.

We were RV camping on the Chesapeake Bay peninsula a few years ago, when I noticed on the map a town with my family name: Bozman, Maryland. We had to go visit, and soon discovered an almost timeless outpost of Americana on the shores of Chesapeake Bay, not far from the bustling-but-cute tourist haven of St. Michael's. Of course, we seized every photo op in town.

We wandered into the Harris Cove Cottages, with drop-dead views right on the bay, and promptly rented a crab boat from the affable manager.

The essential piece of gear was a ruler defining the 5" legal minimum for keeping the feisty little crustaceans. Our son, then 5 years, loved the whole thing -- driving the boat, tying the necks to the weighted line, waiting patiently for the excitement of pulling in the crab, then throwing back all but the few that were legal.

After we docked, we took a tour of the small, charming cabins, each equipped with kitchenette, crab pot, and grill. We vowed to return next season and stay longer, so we could catch and cook a full pot's worth, revisit the great Maritime Museum (410/745-2916; 213 N. Talbot Street) in St. Michael's and explore the many tantalizing local sights we had missed.
