Alaska's Denali Park
A Wintry Summer
by Cathy Green

A Family Travel Forum mother discusses a past summer trip to Alaska and notes that weather can make a difference.

My family enjoyed our wonderful stay at the Kantishna Roadhouse in Denali Park, Alaska. My children, ages 11 and 13 at the time, were thrilled by hiking to see a glorious view of Mt. McKinley.

The adults thought Denali was the best part of the trip, as well as our small ship cruise in Glacier Bay.

Some other memorable places we visited were Haines, the Raptor Center, Barrow and the Kenai Peninsula. Our knowledge of eagles, whales and glaciers grew from our Alaskan vacation and the kids began a real love for the environment there.

One important fact to remember is that summer in Alaska offers pretty rotten weather -- we were snowed on in August and blessed with tons of rain!
