The Only Activity Book You'll Ever Need (Klutz, $12.95) Kids 6+
Whoever created this crazy kids book obviously had a sense of humor. With pages about windshield bugs to color, and instructions on how to draw The Great Chicken, how could they not? This sturdy book also contains simple puzzles, crafts and gags that mainly require punching perforated holes from the pages. It encourages children to create, scribble, and rip apart. Each page is a new surprise, and since there are 120 pages, it won't get old too quickly. Five crayons included.

Glove Compartment Games (A Klutz Real World Guide, $4.95) Kids 6-9.
These 12 accordion-fold, laminated pages offer tons of answers to that famous question, "Are we there yet?" There is a memory testing game, name that tune, and tongue twisters, plus questions such as "If you could be famous in something, what would it be?" or "What's the greatest invention that hasn't been invented?" All are activities you could have thought of yourself, but it is very handy to have it written down and tucked away -- ready when you need it most.
The Everything Kids Travel Activity Book
by Erik & Jeanne Hanson (Adams Media, 2002, $6.95) Kids 9-12.
This book is for older kids who enjoy reading in the car and don't suffer from motion sickness. There are occasional puzzles and pictures, but it's a wordy book that focuses more on ideas for round-the-family games and ways to learn about destinations. This includes everything from the most simple 'count the animals' game, to designing a billboard, to picking up a local newspaper en route. There are also read-alouds of classic stories and a section with descriptions of every U.S. state.
