Kids' Books that Make Global Geography Fun
by Ann Marie Resnick and Jennifer Guterman

Child-friendly geography books use simple maps, puzzles, stickers and illustrations to make learning fun and easy.

An important part of introducing the outside world to young children is to make learning fun. Books with colorful pictures of children and the environments they live in makes geography more real. Here are some suggestions for kid-friendly geography books.

My World and Globe by Ira Wolfman, ill. Paul Meisel (Workman Publishing, $13.95) Ages 4 and up.

Kids can learn the answers to such questions as "Why is it summer in Australia when it is winter in America?" or "What happens when you cross the equator?" An interactive first book of geography, this comes complete with its own 18" inflatable globe. The globe is printed with only the most basic features: water, land, the equator, the big rivers, and mountains. More than 100 stickers can be used to create your own personalized world or to map out your trip.

National Geographic Beginners World Atlas ($17.95) Ages 4-8

This book is a great way to start younger children on map skills. Introductory sections explain what maps are, how they make the round world flat, and the differences between the physical and political world. This colorful atlas also comes with a pronunciation guide for newly learned place names.
