Foreign Language Learning No Matter What Your Age
by Ann Marie Resnick

FTF looks at books, audio tapes and CDs that make learning a new language fun and easy for children.

Since I’ve just learned that almost 49% of all citizens in the EU speak English as well as their native language (in a report from the Institut der detschen Wirtschaft), I felt it was time for native English speakers to broaden their foreign language skills. I have come across some language tapes which are geared to the very young. Learning a few basic words in a new language can be just the confidence-builder your traveling child may need to feel comfortable in his or her new surroundings. School-age children are ready for a different approach.

Teach Me More (Spanish, French, Japanese, Italian, Chinese, Russian, German, or Korean!) Audio CD and book, $15.95. (ages 3 and up)

Here’s a way to learn a new language as you travel throughout the year celebrating holidays, birthdays, exploring museums, etc., and singing all the way.

Spanish: A Bilingual Music Program Audio CD and Book, $11.99-$19.95 (ages 3 and up)

These are the perfect introduction to a second language for toddlers. They combine both English and Spanish in the same song. This is great for English speakers learning Spanish as well as for Spanish speakers learning English. The tunes are very catchy, so it makes learning the language easier and more fun.

Spanish, Italian, French, or German for Children Book with 3 CDs, all by Catherine Bruzzone, $29.95. (ages 4-8)

Join SuperCat as he imagines and sings his way through a foreign language and culture. Included in the package are an activity book, two 60-minute CDs for the kids and an instructional CD for parents.
