Greetings Fellow Travelers,
Following a long weekend in which many Americans did community service to honor Dr. Martin Luther King's memory, we'd like to talk about voluntourism. FTF has written about family volunteering with a very few organizations that are set up to accept help from kids. We know that young people are interested in giving back; an analysis of the 2009 Teen Travel Writing Scholarship submissions revealed that stories of service projects were up 20% year-over-year.
However, two-thirds of teens participating in church or volunteer programs served outside the U.S. With so much need in our country, we'd like to see many more opportunities made available to them. If you're aware of any programs for teens or families working together, please post the information on the FTF blogs. And if you're planning a Valentines Day, Presidents Day or Spring Break Getaway, share your secrets for staying calm in airport security lines.
Stay in touch, and wherever you're off to, safe there, safe home,
