With Halloween approaching, our staff has been surfing Instructables.com for cool costume making tips, and goby.com for fun activities in their neighborhood. Buying Halloween stuff (except candy, of course) is just sooo pre-recession. And moms concerned with childhood obesity, the environment, dental bills and safety may want to treat with plastic jewelry instead of candy.

But for those of you who will be traveling over that fateful 31st day of the month, we have news of haunted happenings and fun places -- to show off kids costumes -- in Texas, New York, Utah, Louisiana and California.
